In just his second week as Apple's CEO, John Ternus has unveiled the first major change to the iPhone since its launch nearly 20 years ago.

And with a starting price ranging from US$2,000 to US$3,200 in the United States (plus tax), it's also the most expensive iPhone yet. The foldable phone has reportedly been in development inside Apple for several years.

The Foldable Phone Question

Redesigning the iPhone could help Apple answer critics who argue the company hasn't delivered a genuinely exciting product breakthrough since the original iPhone launched in 2007.

Dipanjan Chatterjee, an analyst at the consulting firm Forrester, struck a cautious note, suggesting foldables risk becoming little more than an expensive novelty item in people's pockets — one with symbolic value but no real growth to show for it. He floated two possible outcomes for the foldable iPhone: it could follow the path of Apple's Vision Pro headset, which launched at US$3,699 and flopped commercially, or it could end up more like the Apple Watch — never as central to Apple's business as the iPhone, but still bought by millions of people every year.

Apple isn't exactly breaking new ground with the Duo. Manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have been selling foldable phones for years, though these devices still make up only a small share of global smartphone sales. Apple's entry into the category is expected to put foldables back in the spotlight.
